Morgan Creek Trail Close to Covington

The Morgan Creek Trail has become a favorite destination. Starting in an idyllic park setting close to the NW side of Cedar Rapids, in minutes you roll through prairie and park. Several miles later you reach Covington – the current turn around point. The good news is that the underpass west from Covington to the Cedar River is in final engineering and design. Construction should start in 2026!

Next goal is the bridge across the Cedar River! The County is seeking funds to begin the design phase of the Cedar River Bridge.
In the meantime, construction on the short segment from the Cedar River to 42nd street by Xavier High School should start in June with completion by 2026!
Morgan Creek to the Cedar River
Turning left out of Morgan Creek Park at E Ave NW you join the Cherokee Trail and start the parks ride! The trail runs through Cherry Hill Park, Jacolyn Park and Cherokee Park. From Cherry Hill Park, low traffic bikeways are used through neighborhoods and rejoin the trail at Jacolyn Park. The current endpoint is Edgewood Road. Plans are underway to reach the Cedar River and downtown trails by way of the Vinton Ditch (design and right of way is still underway). Construction start is anticipated in 2026.

Lightline bridge ceremony picture

Okay…it’s kind of a mishmash to traverse the trail through Downtown CR. Well construction is to start this year on the long-awaited 4th Street Trail project. This Cedar River portion of the CVNT from 7th Ave SE to the future Alliant Energy LightLine Bridge will see some action! On April 29th the groundbreaking for the bridge was a well-attended ceremony.
